Visceral Manipulation

What is Visceral Manipulation?

At optimal health, the relationship between the organs (viscera) and structures of the body (muscles, membranes, fasciae and bones) remains stable despite the body’s endless varieties of motion. Abnormal tone, adhesions, or displacement create fixed points that the body is forced to move around. The resulting chronic irritation leads to disease and dysfunction both locally and globally in the body.

Visceral manipulation is a technique developed by osteopathic physician, Jean-Pierre Barral. It is a gentle hands-on therapy that works through the body’s visceral system (the lungs, stomach, liver, and other internal organs) to locate and alleviate these abnormal points of tension throughout the body. It relies on the palpation of rhythmic motions of the visceral system to evaluate how abnormal forces within the viscera affect the whole body. Small, precisely directed forces reap the greatest results due to the delicate and often highly reactive nature of the visceral tissues. These gentle manipulations can potentially improve the functioning of individual organs, the systems the organs function within, and the structural integrity of the entire body.

There is a strong correlation between tension patterns within the viscera and structural (ie. muscles and joints) pain and dysfunction. In fact, it was found that often, structural problems self-correct following proper VM. If you are experiencing chronic pain, headaches, or any unresolved symptoms following surgery, injury, disease or childbirth, you may benefit from VM.

Visceral manipulation is commonly used for…
abdominal or chest surgery
lung infections, bronchitis, asthma
chronic pain due to trauma/injury/poor posture/malalignment
pregnancy
incontinence and bladder infections
orthopedic problems
etc.
